On the surface it may seem shallow to believe that a persons outer appearance is important but no one is going to congratulate you on your perfectly funcitioning liver. First impressions fortunately do count or the world would be playing host to severely under groomed, strange talking people. A streak in vanity, a fascination with the never ending world of glamour, together with a huge interest people has inspired me to take up Beauty Therapy. I remember a period in my life just post puberty where self loathing would take over and one day I walked out of a salon thinking, "WOW! I feel great! I could conquer the world!!" It was a simple case of lather, rinse and repeat and a GHD straightner. The second thought that entered my head was "I really really really want to make people feel this good".
The course I am applying for draws together an understanding of the body in a scientific light, something I am familar with and immensely enjoyed in my degree, where we had to focus on the brain and how it effects the body. I feel that I am strongly focused on my extra curriculur commitments as I am on my academic acheievements which reflects the standards required to take on a HND. I am currently half way through completing a Duke of Edinburgh scheme, I have dipped in and out of voluntary work experience and interests from working in cancer wards in hospitals, caring for people with leprosy, writing articles for fashion magazines and mainstream newspapers and watching my mum run a part time beauty therapy business from home from a young age. I find that my acitivities all reflect a strong interest in people a personality character trait that I feel is vital in the field of beauty therapy whereby trust and confidentiallity is essential.
I am a hard working person and I like to give 200% percent to everything and it comes from being a slightly hard lined perfectionist. I like to add a personal touch to everything I do and can easily adapt to changing environments. I like to think of myself as leading a colourful life and everything I do resonates the person I am, which can be confirmed by many friends and peers!
Beauty is a continually evolving concept that will always change because no one person is the same. I take inspiration from differences and enjoy appreciating each individual as a person. Coming from a multi cultural background I have been exposed to different types of cultural practices, watched over a 100 different weddings, seen dark skinned to light skinned people and the prejudices against colour which inspired me to look into phrenology as a personal interest. Academically bound from a young age, I have always been curious about people and a chance to pursue this course would finally let me explore my creativity in a hands on approach and that would enable me to meet new people all the time. I would be able to apply my degree in psychology exploring the way the body affects the mind and vica versa. Most of all, I would be making a true difference to people inside and out hopefully creating for myself a reputable and interesting career.
