I don't know what I want to do. - axelalezah - 14/08/2009

Hi.

I'm just wondering if anyone is in the same position as me. All of my friends and everyone I speak to seems to know what they want to do with their life... but I really don't. I want a gap year to travel and sort my head out but my tutor is, quite understandably, making me apply for 2010. I have no idea what I want to study, where I want to go or what career I want to have... I cannot begin to start writing a personal statement for this very reason! I was considering doing Chemistry but I can't think of any reason why I would want to do that subject; it just seems to be my only option at the moment. I'm so mentally and physically exhausted that I have no motivation to consider my future. Everything just seems so hopeless and I'm in desperate need of a break! Is there anyone else who doesn't know what they want to study at University? Does anyone have any reasonable suggestions? I hate that we are expected to have our life planned out at the age of 17. Although the same cannot be said for my stress levels, I don't have any problems with my grades. I'm working towards As, although I wouldn't be shocked if I got Bs, in Maths, Psychology, English, Chemistry and Biology... I volunteer, I do Duke of Edinburgh and I take part in various different sports and activities so I really shouldn't have any problem with my personal statement... but I do. I'm such a boring person with no interest in anything. What do I do?! Thank you!

Take the test on the UCAS website. Look up the Stamford Test and Centigrade Online for your career/degree choices. Unfortunately there's little else you can do.

Also no one's got their life planned out - I only decided me degree choice in year 11 and even then I wasn't sure.

To be honest, If you want a gap year to explore and find out about the world and yourself then go for it - regardless of what your teacher thinks you should do. Especially if you dont know what you want to do with your life. There's nothing wrong with not knowing what you want to do - its just a sign that you need to get out there and find out what you enjoy; what youre good at; what youre bad at; what makes you feel valued.

Try find something that you think will be fun or interests you - even if you've never tried it before in your life and it looks ridiculously hard - if you have enough experiences eventually you'll find something you do enjoy and want to stick it and then you'll be on the right track.

With regards to having the courage to change - once you start to try new things you'll find stuff youre good at and you can build on that. How are you finding DoE? Anything about that that interests you?

Benjamin

PS: I hated the way people expected me to know what I wanted to do for the rest of my life when I was 17 too! There's so much you havent done at that age.

Honestly, it does'nt matter if you don't know what you want to do right now, in many ways thats a good thing. Don't rush into a course you won't enjoy, take a gap year and enjoy yourself!!!

what do you interest ? you can make your interest become your job ,or do what you are good at ! if you can dream it , you can do it !

I never had a clue what I wanted to do, the tests (school ones not the ucas one) always told me jobs I knew I'd hate. So I went to college to do something that sounded like fun, that I'd enjoy. I did interior design which led my into architecture. I didn't really like architecture but I'm now almost finished architectural technology which I love and I can't wait to work in. But I only got here because I just went with what I enjoyed.
Get loads of prospectuses, flic through and mark any that you like the sound of. If you don't find anything don't panic. Have a gap year, maybe try to get work experiece in different fields and see what you like, you may be surprised Smile Good luck x
